Tuesday Tirade

Babes Rockin Mami does a Tuesday Tirade, and I think I’ll join her.

One of my favorite sayings is, “Never underestimate the power of stupidity in a large group of people.” It’s like, when a big, huge group gets together, sometimes individual brains are forgotten and one giant stupid brain takes over.

Take, for example, Daylight “Savings” time.

There are so many things wrong with this unnecessary event that we willingly allow to royally fuck up our systems. Many people seem to agree with me. Many people want to jump off the crazy train called, “Hey! Let’s all change our clocks an hour and see what happens!” Unless, these people just nod their head in agreement at me, wondering when I’ll stop complaining.

If so many people have suggested that this event be eliminated, if Arizona and Hawaii have the wherewithal to JUST NOT PARTICIPATE, then why do we keep doing it?

Here are some things I’d like to point out about Daylight Savings Time that particularly irk me:

-In the Fall, there is no “savings” on the daylight. We get home at 4:00 pm and it starts getting dark. Yet, whoopity-do, it is light at 5:00 am. Gee, thank god for that.

-You might as well go bang your head against a wall if you want to hear over and over for weeks on end in the Spring how tired everyone is because of their lost hour of sleep.

-I have come to terms with the fact that my toddler son will now wake up on the weekend at 7:00 instead of a more lovely 8:00 – whatever. But, it is really annoying to deal with all the grumpiness and downright evil that can come from my son when he is so hungry and doesn’t understand why we are not eating dinner at 4:45 pm. Last night, I tried to give him a snack, to no avail. He sat at the dinner table and demanded that it is dinner time. It was 4:15.

-All babies, toddlers, and children’s bodies do not know what the hell is going on. If you are a parent or work with children in any way, this is Very Annoying. For everyone involved.

-My snacking increases as I squirrel away like a hibernating bear in the dark early evening, waiting for dinner time to come.

-Once we are all adjusted and have left the hell of Daylight Savings Time behind us, we will do it all over again in the Spring, but, wait, that one is EVEN WORSE. We all lose an hour. You know, in the interest of Daylight “SAVINGS.”

How is that smart? For what REAL purpose does this serve? If there is a real purpose (I have done research, people. Trust me, there is no real purpose), then is all of this worth it? Why do we let it continue on? What kind of legislation needs to be started? For crying out loud…

I do know what you mean - it is pretty annoying. I think it came in during the first World War (in UK anyway) apparently it helps the farmers so they have light to milk the cows or whatever it is farmers do. They can't do their stuff in the evenings, it seems, and so they stole our sun. There were fewer farmers around due to the free holidays in France being offered by the government at that time, and so they needed the extra hour to get their farms farmed.

Since then we have grown more farmers and invented lights that work really well - even on farms, so why we still do it I'm not really sure.

To be fair, I quite like the Autumn one though as you get an extra hour in bed - and I support that whole heartedly. Maybe we should keep it but just stop doing the Spring one - would that work?

Living in Arizona, while all of my family lives in Oregon, I have to constantly remind people that they're on the same time as I am in the summmer, but in the winter they're an hour behind. It can get really confusing because most people a) don't know that AZ doesnt change, b) can't remember after I tell them and c)tell me that AZ is silly for not changing like everyone else. The state isn't doing it to be non-conformist... we don't need anymore day light!

Kristy for President!!! I WILL back you.

Girl, I am so tired I could just curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep. I can't take this change!! My son has been awake at 5:30 am every morning since Sunday. SUNDAY!

Last night I went to bed at 8. At 8:15 I demanded my husband go watch the football game in another room b/c it was distracting. 8:15!!!

DST is ruining my child, my marriage, and my life. I am done.

I'll sign your petition - having been woken up to begin the day at 4:50am today by my daughter.

I understand your annoyance but I love the hour going back. It let me sleep more when I was exhausted. Hate time going ahead in the spring. Time goes by too fast without losing an hour of the day. Unless it would jump ahead in the middle of the day while I'm at work. I could get on board with that.

That, and the TV show you THINK is on at seven is really on at eight.

There is only one way to handle this situation. Move home to Phoenix, sweetheart! Love, Mom :)

I had no idea that Hawaii 'opted out', I have a friend who lives there and she was talking about how she forgot about the time some show was on because 'the states have daylight savings time'...now I know! I've been tortured by early wake up times. Not. Fun.

I HATE this time crap. It's not okay that my children are waking up at 4:30 am.. it makes for a very grouchy mother

I never thought about daylight savings time until I had kids and it totally screwed up my life. Seriously, who's the idiot that came up with this nonsense???

I don't get it, either. I don't need it to be light so early. And I definitely don't need my kids wide awake at 5:30.

I HATE Daylight Savings Time. Since it gets dark so early, I'm ready to go to bed at 5.

I could do without the 5 a.m. "All done!" from Wee 'Burb.

As a former Arizona girl, I say eff DST and the horse it rode in on.

Of course, the side effects of living in AZ include burning your hands on a 100 degree steering wheels and a lake of greenery in general.

I am not a fan, not at all! My little ones wake time messes with her and me. I think it's time to move to AZ. Hope your having a great week!

We have daylight savings in some states here too, and it really does mess about with the little ones. I don't mind it right in the middle when it's light enough to spend some extra time outside in the afternoon, but I'm not a fan of adjusting sleep and meal times.

I have to agree. It's pretty stupid.

Amen and couldn't have said it better myself. I've often wondered about this whole daylight savings time but just figured we'd have to fall back and spring forward indefinitely.

This letter must be addressed to someone of importance :)

I know, honey. I remember reading somewhere that it has to do with screwing up the schedules of cows and when they're milked. (I'm not kidding...really!) It was the most ludicrous thing I'd ever read.

And you're right...it's infinitely worse in the spring.

And you never even touched on the fact that our pest have to adjust too. My dog has no idea what time it is now and wants dinner an hour early.
